Today I was up early and had to leave Aymerics by 10am as he was moving out of his apartment today and needed to give his keys back. Mid-morning I got an email from English opens doors an English teaching department here in Chili; requesting an immediate interview via Skype. Luckily I had just enough time at Aymerics to take the interview in regards to an upcoming summer camp. The interview went really well and I was told I would hear back by the end of the day if I had or had not been successful. The position is for one week and has the option of continuing for a further 3 weeks whereby I will support a Chilean English Teacher in a summer teaching program. Just after 10 Aymeric and Almendra took me to the bus stop and showed me which bus I needed to take in order to get to Valparaiso where I would be couchsurfing the next 3 days. Arriving in Valparaiso you are hit with a city full of character, old buildings, artwork and a certain dirtiness. City's like Valparaiso I really like with there little old shops, various street markets and the people are so much more interesting then your wealthy stuck-up city dwelling folk. I had just over 3 hours to kill before I could meet my host Lorena so I wondered around the streets admiring the old architecture and checking out some markets. At 2pm I made my way up the hill (all of Valparaiso is on crazy steep hills) and met Lorena at her house. Lorena speaks very little English so we conversed in Spanish, she showed me around her beautiful home and the view: out of this world then we spent the next few hours chatting and I realized what an amazing person Lorena is. I did some yoga whilst Lorena had a sleep and at about another Couchsurfer came (from France) who needed an emergency couch for the night. We had all been invited to Lorena's Mothers place for Once (kind of like a meal time similar to afternoon tea) so at about 8:30pm we walked through the city and to her house. Lorena's Mother was a lovely lady but I really struggled to understand her but tried my best, once was brought out (bread, few slices of ham and mashed up avocado with tea) - unfortunately it was far from being dinner and I was so hungry I ate nearlly all that was in front of me. We chatted right into the early morning and as time went on and I became more tired I understood less and less but had some really good advice on places to visit on the South of Chile. By midnight we said our goodbyes and made the long 40 minute hike back to Lorena's. the streets were still full of late night party people and a few of them stopped to chat with me which was quite different compared to the usual drunken chats from randoms stumbling home drunk at night. These Chileans who stopped to talk with me were not drunk and really just wanted to chat to a foreigner and practice a little English - it was nice and I can't help feeling a sense of welcomeness in this city.
