Today was first day of camp and I was up early excited and full of anticipation for the day ahead. The breakfast was to be served at 8am but was very late (very Chilean) and when it finally came it was incredibly disappointing: coffee and bread rolls with egg. The nutritionist explained to me they had nothing for me but tommorow they would get something I could eat - what what: I couldn't believe it nothing? After 20 minutes I couldn't take it and went and asked the chefs to cook me an egg as I was very hungry and luckily they agreed - but barely a breakfast. The day started very disorganized and with a complete change of plan and schedule. We were placed in groups of 3; 2 Chilean-English teachers and 1 native speaker: in my group I had Natalia and Valencia both very motivated and well organized training teachers that I am lucky to have in my team. We had a small meeting where students were assigned to groups and we as teachers introduced ourselfs. The morning went off without a hitch and it became quite obvious there was a huge difference in English abilities with some students speaking barely a word to others being able to carry out full conversation. I get a really buzz standing in front of the students and for most part I was able to get a response and a certain amount of understanding from some students. My Chilean teachers were brilliant and so well organized that I could simply instruct the kids and they could support me and when they took centre stage and struggled conveying something I could jump in and help out. We played games, laughed and got to know one another before the snack bell was run and it was off to the canteen for a very healthy sugary juice and chocolate biscuit. After the short break we were back in the classroom playing more games and at around 12pm headed to the assembly area for our opening ceremony. The school had representatives from various organizations and the education department attend but amazingly they were late (as per usual in Chile) a whole hour late and the poor kids had to sit around waiting - Great example being set. Unfortunately I see a lot of problems with the system here and there are too many people not caring about the students and caring only for the money at the end of the day so the kids from day 1 will be fighting an uphill battle. The assembly finally started at 1pm and after a bunch of talks (mainly in Spanish - supposed to be solely English) it was over and we could take the kids for lunch. We had to line the kids up and have them ask for their lunch in English which took an incredibly long time and meant we spent most of our break-time waiting around for the kids to finish. Lunch was basic but ok: I ended up with my special celiac meal of chicken and tomato salad whilst the others had chicken, potatoes, fried rice, tomato salads, bread, jelly/banana, fruits and papaya juice - basically they aren't going to do anything fancy for me so I may go a little hungry this week. After lunch had finished we only had about 30 minutes so I had to head over to the office and use the Internet in order to look at changing my bus ticket and making sure I had a place to stay when I returned to Puerto Montt. At 3pm we started again and introduced the students to their national projects; all the coordinators and heads of the program had taken off for lunch with the VIP guests so not only did we have no direction we had no access to equipment - more disorganization and they returned 2.5 hours later. Luckily we have a smart bunch of teachers and we took everything into our hands and changed the curriculum and plan a little. The final snack time came and the students were given juice and an ice cream before the coordinator finally returned apologizing for her late arrival and then saying that would be it for the day for the students. We had a final goodbye before making our way to the staff room to plan for the next day, we basically did everything outer selfs as the coordinator who was supposed to teach us the curriculum had obviously not even studied it. At 6:30pm it was time for dinner so we called it a night and made our way to the cafeteria. After waiting for all the kids to line up and get their dinner it was time for us. Once again I ended up with a joke of a meal; slice of chicken and lettuce but luckily I had a tomato stashed in the room so I went and got that. After dinner it was still really early and the sun was out (sunset is after 10pm here) so Emily, Ursula & I went firstly for a walk around the farm and then along the road out of town to a small shop. The girls brought a few snacks before we headed back to campus and joined the others in the Girls house for a few drinks. Everyone hung-out tonight; chatting, telling stories and relaxing after a long day and at midnight I once again called it quits and headed back to my dorm rooms.
