Today I was up early again and helping Lilian make her famous homemade bread - as I have trouble with gluten she had gone and brought rice flour that is gluten free. We got creative and added Raisens, sultanas, sesame seeds and flax seeds to the mix and the result was a delicious fruity gluten free bread. Lilian had to go to work so I had a few Mates then headed down to the waterfront to get some sunshine and write my blog. I returned to the apartment for a quick lunch where I experimented with my traditional Australian tortilla/quiche: using dried sausage, soy meat and coating in crushed Brazil nuts. I then decided I would take the metro out to the end of the line and to the famous Ipanema Beach. Ipanema is a whole different city compared to Rio where I am; the people and culture is very beach orientated but not necessarily more relaxed. It's very strange like super fashionable beach bums and very expensive shops and resteraunts. I made my way to the beach and it reminded me a lot of Perth beaches back at home but with lots more going on; sports, tanning areas, cafes, people selling crap - you name it and it was happening at Ipanema. I walked along the beach observing all the different types of people that frequent Ipanema and was rather disappointed that there was a lack of local Brazilian women but an abundance of jacked up Brazilian guys. I made it to the fort where I had been told was the best place to view the sunset; found myself a nice spot and watched the hundreds of surfers in the water battling for what was terrible waves. The area where I was sitting soon filled up with tourists and locals a like and we all sat in awe as the sun disappeared behind the mountains and the result - fabulous burnt oranges and reds creeped out from behind the mountains. The sunset was truly magical and I am sure I had just witnessed one of natures true wonders.
After a bit more of a walk around I made my way back to the Metro and back to station Flamengo; on arrival I went to the supermarket and picked up some chicken for tonight's dinner. Lillian wasn't supposed to get back until late but arrived early so I decided to get a bit fancier with dinner. After doing some yoga I made sesame seed oven roasted chicken alongside a crunchy nut Thai salad. Lilian was so appreciative of the dinner and having me at their apartment it gave me an overwhelming sense of joy and I thanked my lucky stars I had met Leo and her 6 months ago in San Pedro Atacama.
OBSERVATIONS:
- Rio is more like a group of different cities
- Ipanema is like Venice beach of California
- Chicken is really cheap - raw $2-$3 kilo and cooked $6 a kilo
