Schools Back!! Today Rachel had asked me to come and talk to her students where she works. As today is my only free day in Recife before leaving tommorow I agreed to come to the afternoon class (6-8pm) so that I could atleast have one morning here to myself. First thing I did was head to the beach for a walk and some sunshine and to catch up on my blog. I then stopped at the vegetable and fruit store to grab a few bits and pieces for dinner (my famous Tortilla). I decided to make the dinner in the middle of the day and then stick in the refrigerator as tonight I new we would be late home from class. In the afternoon I took a bus into the city (taking over one hour from Candiace) and visited the San Juan Market. The market was amazing and had all kinds of bits and pieces at really good prices however I only had 30 minutes before I needed to start making my way to Rachel's work. The walk to the college was interesting and I crossed through very poor areas and then all of a sudden into an expensive business district. I had quite a bit of trouble finding her work or the cafe where she was supposed to be but eventually I found the school. The school is a Military school and amazingly (Rachel had told me it would be difficult to enter) they let me in easy enough and I made my way to Rachel's classroom where all the lights were off- turns out the students had prepared a little surprise party for Rachel's birthday - so I said hello to the students and then joined them in the dark waiting for Rachel's arrival. Rachel came and the surprise went off perfectly - the students had brought cake, sweets and savory pies and cheese things so we all stood around eating and drinking whilst I introduced myself. The class consisted of just 6 students of varying ages and vastly different levels of English - most were at a very beginner stage. After the cake I gave a short presentation about myself and my travels and asked the students questions in the hope they could understand me and practice their English - a few of the students got involved whilst the others (who were very shy) I unfortunately could not get a word out of. The students gave me a list of things to do in Recofe but unfortunately I am off tommorow so I won't get to do or experience their suggestions this time around. In the end it was a good experience, a little sad seeing the students creating their own roadblocks in learning English (shyness and no confidence) but it helped Rachel out a lot so I was happy to do it. One of Rachel's students gave us a lift half-way home and then we took a bus home taking an hour and a half. I was taking care of dinner again (Rachel doesn't cook) which luckily I had prepared earlier in the day and so I just needed to heat it up. We ate quite late and chatted a little before Rachel was back on Skype talking with her friend from back home. I can tell Rachel misses her home, friends and family a lot and I hope she can find happiness in her new home Recife.
OBSERVATIONS:
- São Juan Market - one of the best in Brazil so far
- English Class - students pay high fees, level is very low (barely understanding me)
