Leisurely morning just messing about, left at about 9 am in gentle rain. Crossed the A 172 ( a whole lot easier than the A19) and immediately started going uphill into woodland, very pretty walk and reasonably sheltered from the rain. Then started climbing in more exposed conditions, on Carlton Bank we were battered by wind and rain but looking forward to a drink and something to eat at Lord Stones Cafe - another cafe to have bitten the dust since our guide book was written! Continued walking in grim, wet, cold conditions, coming down Kirkby Bank was particularly hairy - slippy, steep and wind blowing you down faster and faster. Found the turn off to Beak Hills farm and arrived at about 2 pm soaked and weather beaten, greeted with a cup of tea and biscuits and a warm up by the fire. 10.5 miles
