Julie:
It's been quite a day! We went into the city walls of Évora and saw Roman ruins and finds. Then we headed to see the megalithics..the road took us through a gorgeous cork tree grove-it was worth the trip for the views alone! The megalithics are rocks-that's how I feel. I was more excited about seeing the cork trees and peeing outside (no port-a-potties!) the trees are beautiful.
Next we went south to the Algarve. We booked an apartment for three nights in Lagos, only to arrive and be told the place is closed for the month! So we drive around Lagos totally lost looking for a backup plan. After coming to the end of a very narrow one-way alley, we are blocked in by a car with hazards on and no driver! Eventually (after loud honking and attempting to get around the car) a So-Cal type guy runs up to move the car. I decided I might as well see if he can help us, since he already inconvenienced us! We ask for directions. He tells us "go to the road and turn. It's easy". HA like we hadn't thought of that! We accidentally ended up on the correct avenue, and found the best hotel yet. We have heated bathrooms (and a towel warmer), a balcony overlooking the marina, a safe, and a heated pool on the fourth floor (which we can't find, but that's okay-no suits!). We also get a free parking spot right in front of the hotel. WonderfuL!
Looking forward to calling Lagos home for the next three nights.
Corri: too tired-will blog in morning.
It is 7 AM and I am up now. I can't believe Julie was unimpressed with the megaliths! I have failed as a mother. They were amazing! In fact, in terms of history yesterday was the best day ever. First the bone chapel in Evora: a small chapel with the walls covered in human bones from the 16th century. I told you us Portuguese love our gruesome things! Then the Roman ruins! But my next biggest excitement was the Phoenician finds at the Evora museum. I AM Phoenician! That explains everything. And the megaliths...it really felt like a sacred space as they sat there like a family staring toward the rising sun. (Don't worry; I made sure Julie peed far from them,) thank God history loving Andy was with me yesterday!
The drives have been beautiful, so glad just to see this country. Yes, beach boy was hilarious, but another example of how nice people are. Food is still amazing even in a little sandwich shop, and God is still with us. Otherwise we would never have found our wonderful hotel last night, I am still having trouble uploading pictures but I will get some more on here soon.
