Julie:
Today was beautiful-we spent the morning in downtown Coimbra, walking through winding narrow and steep streets. The weather was gorgeous. We had chá (tea), café (coffee), and agua (water) at a cafe inside an old church. The women's bathroom was the old confessional! We had lunch at Café Montanha again, and had the same sweet waiter who remembered to bring extra olives.
We took a surprise excursion for Andy to see Batalha, where the Portuguese battled and won and a monastery was built. Andy knew the history from memory and was our personal tour guide!
We continued south, and finally arrived in Évora at the Ibis hotel. We have joining rooms! We just got back from dinner at Dom Joaquim...amazing. Had tiny (and delicious) linguica, and olive oil/honey gelato! Tomorrow=Évora in detail, including the bone chapel!
Pictures added to "North Portugal". Will start south Portugal album tomorrow! Thank you all for the warm comments, it's nice for us to know people are reading :)
Corri: Our trek through Coimbra was very steep but I was quite proud of myself. I didn't tire at all and my knee was fine! Loved the narrow winding streets and old churches.;0
Batalha was AMAZING! We had this lovely drive through the hills. You come into town go around the corner and all of the sudden there is this HUGE church from the fourteenth century. I have great pictures I can use in my classes.
I have discovered that my fascination with violence is genetic. I have taken pictures of kinds if grotesque images. My favorites were at the children's museum. They had one building with tiles along the walls of biblical stories. Most I were New Testament but a few Old. Included in the Old were NOT nice stories like Ruth or David becoming king, but there was a Flood story that focused on the people dying, and.... Judith chopping off Holofernes's head! I'm going to tell that one to Julie and Mike's future children as a bedtime story.
As Julie said: great food once again. And today done random woman came up to me and started talking in Portuguese. At least I feel like I belong.
