So they say one of the things you must do when in Port Vila is to visit the markets due to its liveliness and colour.
And so I did, and it is what they say it is. The colours of the flowers are amazing of deep reds, glistening golds, bright pinks and lush greens. All the fruits and veggies are sold by families who have grown them in their own gardens to bring in a bit of extra money for their families. From pineapples to mangoes to limes and bags of bananas and radishes. All these are sold at a very cheap price according to our Sydney standards. A HUGE bunch of veges are a dollar, mangoes are priced depending on size averaging at 50c a mango, huge papayas at a dollar each. They even sell live crabs by the bunch for $4. Bargain.
Getting around the island is pretty convenient. There are buses that come around every 3 seconds. They're like people movers and can be differentiated by the letter B in front of the letters on the number plate. An average bus ride to where you wanna go is $1.50-$2.
The people are so lovely here, they don't seem violent at all and it seems like everyone knows everyone on the island. You'll be on the bus and the locals on the bus would have waved to about 7 people on average, the driver even more.
The Breaks Beach Resort is located in the more rural ends of town near a small village called Pango Village. I met a lovely woman and her husband from this village on one of bus rides back to the resort and she offered her guest house to stay in the next time I'm in Port Vila.
They've got it right here. Shops open at 7am til 6pm with a siesta in the middle from 11am to 1pm and then they're back in business afterwards. They call Vanuatu the 'happiest place on earth' and now I see why. Cuz they have a long ass nap in the middle of the work day! I'd be heaps happy of I could have a nap during work. Win.
They also drive on the right hand side of the road and come to think of it, this should be the right way to drive. One of the bus drivers said to me 'right is right!' and most of the world drives on the right side of the road except us, the kiwi's and Japan I think. If we drove on the right side, it'll make it easier to import cars from america without having to do a conversion. But then they've gotta change some rules with importing laws on cars etc, so I guess that idea is out the window unless they change the laws. Talk about a tangent.
Tonight some villagers and the kids came to the resort to perform a show. They we're dressed in leaves and faces painted with white stripes. The kids looked like they were having so much fun dancing around and at the end I got a photo with the group. No joke, some of the people here look like Don Cheadle, keep having to do head turns.
So gonna try some kava tonight at the local village, apparently it's meant to relax you and has some sort of healing properties to it.
