To get back to Vancouver from Powell River you need to take 2 ferries. The first one is from Saltery Bay to Earl's Cove which you pay for. Then you need to drive to Gibson's to take the second ferry from there to Vancouver - and that one is free.
We decided that we would do them both in the one day as well as visit our friends in Sechelt - Carey & Peggy - and our friends in Gibsons - Bob & Jackie. It sounded like a good plan.
We took the first ferry and found our way to Sechelt. We actually were the first car at the front of the ferry so we could sit in our car and look out at the view.
Peggy and Carey who have a cottage up at Aylen Lake have a place in Sechelt that overlooks the inlet. As we were having pizza out on there deck 2 Mule deer walked out and crossed their backyard!
We left Sechelt and headed to Gibsons. We had not yet been able to get hold of Jackie and Bob but while we were driving I found a cell phone number. We arrived at their house and gave them a call - they were out shopping. Now being virgins at this whole ferry thing we assumed since the terminal was just 3 minutes from their house we would only have to leave 10 minutes before the ferry was departing at 7:30. NOT! Jackie looked up the schedule just before 6:00 pm and the 6:50 ferry was full and the 7:30 ferry was 80% - we had to leave immediatley. Sadly we only got to see them for about half an hour.
We headed to the ferry - Jack had forgotten his sunglasses but as we got in line we heard someone calling his name. There on the other side of the street was Bob, Jackie and HoJo with his glasses.
The ferry personnel directed us to the overflow area and we had to wait to see if we could get on. Remember it was only 6:00!
We did manage to get on the 7:30 and decided to have supper on board. The journey was only 40 minutes long and the line up in the cafeteria was so long that by the time we got served the ferry was docking so we grabbed a pre made salad and a sandwich. We had spent the entire time in the cafeteria and hadn't seen a single thing outside.
Lots of lessons to learn about living on the coast and depending on ferries.
