Alarms went off at 8 and Chris and and Josh went down to book the Mekong delta tour which were told the night before left at 9. It was leaving then. Since we were checking out that day we had 30 seconds to get up, pack all our stuff, get dressed and get out the hostel. We managed it in around 10 minutes as an angry Vietnamese tour guide stood at the bottom of our stairs clapping at us! We thought this timing was very impressive!
Thank god there was no bus b**** because we were last on the bus by a fair way. We were also last on the boat because Nic and Josh were stuck on the toilet in the ferry station! Hurried onto the boat by the now even more angry tour guide we set off up the Mekong delta to coconut island. We didn't thinking name was so literal. There were only coconuts on the island! Sneaking off from the tour group who were touring the third batch of coconuts we scroured the island for water - WE WERE SO DEHYDRTAED!! After a random ride in a horse and carriage we struck gold! With our tour came a free "meal". We were excited until it arrived. It consisted of a cold chicken carcass and uncooked dry rice! After lunch we saw some buffalo chilling in the river before heading to unicorn island. Quick question for readers - is buffalo mozzarella from the region "buffalo" or actually from a "buffalo"? This isn't a rhetorical question please could a reader enlighten us?
If only unicorn island was as literal as coconut island! It was so much fun though. We went to a honey farm surrounded by wasps - Chris was in heaven! We had SO MANY honey treats dipped in honey tea while sampling some royal honey! SO MUCH YUMMY HONEY! Then there was a fruit festival where we enjoyed local fruits while watching some traditional dancing and singing. It was more like whining but we enjoyed it! Next we were given Vietnamese hats and the four of us were punted down the river in a canoe through a mangrove forest - so much fun!
Returning to the city in early evening we decided to book our train tickets for that evening. Through a stroke of luck we stumbled across a travel website where we discovered a 1 hour plane flight was around $3 more than an 18 hour train journey! Obviously we booked it! This meant we had one more night in ho chi Minh so turns out our hurry to check out the hostel was in vain as we returned our stuff to our room. We then explored ho chi Minh in search of a restaurant and found OUR BEST MEAL OF THE TRIP SO FAR! Miranda is still talking about her duck!
On the way home we accidentally bought some alcohol and it somehow slipped down our throats and before we knew it we were in a nightclub and it was 5am. Totally unintentional but a jolly good laugh. We passed out shattered around 6am.
