Mickey - So although our trip is over and we are currently flying over the vast oceans we thought we'd recap what happened over the last week. We mostly hung around and went to the beaches and "swam" (you don't really swim in Sweden, you mostly jump in once or twice then go heat up in the sun) and took hikes along the island. Joseph would always find something to bring back, be it a giant drift-wood tree or a big rock I said was pretty and he insisted on carrying it back for me. :) We were trying to find a use for the giant tree (it was cool, completely straight and branchless and really tall (taller than our two story house and also than the lightpole)) and decided on a flagpole. We duck taped (woop) a Swedish flag onto the pole and then ducktaped the pole to a little tree (will include pictures!). Everyone was impressed with our flagpole :) After so many days on the island we decided to go with my grandpa to Karlstad where he had to do some work. We went with the hopes of picking strawberries the next day (yummy!). Of course, we found a strawberry farm and we picked (and ate most of them) strawberries while my grandpa dug up potatoes. The potato picking may not have pleased our tummies as much but it was definitely more fun! Joseph and I had never really seen a potato plant and it was cool picking them off the roots and making sure not to miss the baby-mini potatoes (my favorites, as my grandparents know). We spent most of our time at the strawberry fields, however, and I ended up eating too many strawberries at once (while hunched over picking them) that strawberry juice was pouring (literally a stream) out of my nose. When I showed Joseph and we both started laughing really hard... whole chunks started coming out of my nose... hey, atleast I smelled strawberries all day :P But I can't steal everything to say so here is Joseph :)
Joseph- island days really escape you. It feels like just yesterday we fell exhausted on our bed after flying from Netherlands. Everyday was an adventure, and the sun never seemed to go down (well it did... at like 11:30 a.m.). We hiked or swam every single day, except for the rainy day, we watched movies and played (I won) monopoly instead. I could expand on everything we did but that would take many hours of typing and that would make my carpal will tunnel in (carpal tunnel syndrome). Instead, I will add a few left out activities we did :p After playing kubb (a game where you must knock down the other persons wooden towers by throwing wooden sticks at them [those swedes must get damn bored to invent an awesome game like that]) we were motivated to play another game outdoors, and that motivation led to the setting up of the volleyball net/field. This field was invented by Mickey and morfor (grandfather) (I was busy juggling the volleyball) It was cleverly engineered! To mark the boundaries they put extension cords squarely around the net and held them in place with sticks. The field was used after dinner and even hosted a tournament! there were the old farts (mr modèn and his friend Martin) the older kids (chris and son of Martin) the taco farts (mr modèn and Hannah) and the 1st place champions (Mickey and I). All the teams put up a good fight but teamwork beats talent and I beat everything so we won! Our prize was the first slice of the princess and Daim cake (delish.)
OH. I forgot. One thing I will not miss, the "swims". Let me be the first to tell you, swedes are like penguins (except not as cool, penguins wear tuxes, swedes... let's say they like to feel the breeze) They like to swim in ice. good sweet lord Jesus almighty was that water cold. I mean even the polar bears swimming next to us seemed to be shivering! ha, in all honesty it's not that bad once you get in, as chris put it "it's refreshing bc it takes your breath away" and your life I would like to add. I even swam once with a towel wrapped around my head. Speaking of Swedish swedes, I tried nearly every Scandinavian dish available! (except for bear :( ) I have to admit Rudolph was damn tasty. The fish were ok but I prefer real meat! I had lots of cider and killed a spider. Had lingonberry, and I took the ferry. enjoyed some tasty korv stroganoff, and ....... yeah I ate that. (prolly one of my favorites). Idk if we covered this In the last blog but we got to see extremely rare lime green glowing moss, in a cave far far away. Very Cool. And we hiked the the highest cliff of the highest mountain, which had a breath taking view(no pictures for that unfortunately, we forgot our cameras at home :/ ) Speaking of awesome sights, we went to a bronze age museum that was educational and fun (yeah I didn't think it existed either!) we even got a cool tour, and I got chocolate on my butt. We got pictures of that! I feel like I left out so much but I'm getting tired. our next and final blog will be our thank yous and our highlight reel! stay tuned!
ciao (that's me being European)
