So we moved a whole 10 yards from the Vieng Thai to the 'Green house' - a 5 pound a night each hostel above a cafe..pretty basic but ok. I am officially crap (Jo) at carrying my back pack, not a great start but i'm sure i'll get used to it!
Yesterday we had a day of sweaty advertures. We walked to the grand palace and met some thai locals (2 brothers, one supportes Man City the other Man utd!) on the way who kindly told us the grand palace was shut as it was a special buddhist day. Instead he gave us a list of things we should go and see and told us we should take a tuk - tuk because it was a cheap day. He pointed us in the direction of a tuk-tuk and said they would take us round to all these places for 40 baht. We were a little sceptical but true to his word he took us round to the Big Budda, Lucky Budda, a government/local tailor and the Golden Mountain and waited outside for us.
(I forgot to mention this was our first time in a tuk-tuk which was a little hairy and of course there are no rules on the roads here. You soon get used to the tuk-tuk after the first few near misses. Oh, we did see a man come off his scooter though - think he was ok just lacking a bit of skin...).
We walked back from our adventures and the police had closed the roads temporarily and people holding flowers all waited by the side of the road in silence (we didn't know what was about to happen but we thought it was best to join in). Then came police car after police car..then a rolls royce..followed by police car x 100...we didn't know who it was and later asked someone who spoke a little more english who said it was the kings daughter. She had more escorts than Kate and Wills.
We weren't going to have suits made but when 'Top Ten Collection' said they would make them for a bargain price (got them from 220 - 100 pounds!) we decided to. We met a man who showed us the lucky budda and he had come from Chiang Mai for the day, which he does once a year, and he had ordered 5 suits from the same tailor (so we thought they must be good). We picked a colour and got measured and they were off. After a bit of a sleepless night (me worrying about how awful the suit could be and that had picked the wrong colours for a suit I had just spent a bit of budget on) we went for our fitting this morning. Made overnight, trousers and jacket fitted perfectly on both of us and after a tiny bit of adjustment they've gone off to have their arms sewed on and be sent to the UK. Never again will I shop in the UK for weeks and weeks for a sodding suit.
We're off to Chiang Mai tonight on the night train. Looking forward to moving on although Bangkok is v.interesting it is same same every night.
