Day 15 (5 of Intrepid trip) - 15th November 2008
Day five was one of the strangest days of the trip.We travelled for hours to a small town called Kompong Cham (which is actually the third largest city). Our hotel (Mekong Hotel) had riverside views over the Mekong River (which runs down through Laos and Cambodia). We then rented some bikes (with lovely baskets) and headed off for a bike ride in the pouring rain. After cycling around we headed over to an island via the local ferry.Ferry it was not, it was too old wooden boats which were strung together by some rotten blanks off wood and the odd nail.Place a 2 stroke pop-pop engine on the back and through on about 80 people, bike and motorbikes and you had our ferry. When we reached the other side we headed off into the forest and through a bumpy and muddy path which eventually lead us to a temple. There was also a school for the local kids, where we sat and talked to the teachers and students. After a while mingling with the locals we had a mad dash back through the ever darkening forest to catch the last ferry off the day… which we did, just!
The day then got ever so more random, as we headed off to one of the local Tuk-Tuk drivers house for dinner. It was Alvin's birthday, so we rocked up with our hats on (for his hat party theme) to a little wooden house, built on stilts in the middle of a lake to eat dinner. The food was great and the local beer flowed as we sat on the floor and eat. Then for desert they brought out….. cooked tarantulas. We all thought it was a joke, but it turns out to be delicacies out there, so I think we all actually tried some.A leg was enough for me and nearly made me heave (even though it didn't really taste of anything).Once a few spiders had been eaten, the Tuk-Tuk driver brought out a bloody live one… haha!It was hilarious as we all had a go holding it, for a quick 'Kodak moment' shot!It was a very strange but fun day!!
