Day 3
Up early for breakfast, which was a communal affair, the owner asked the guests to introduce ourselves to the other guests as apparently this is why we booked a guest house and not a hotel! Well she was wrong, I prefer to eat with people I know. Still it was pleasant enough, one couple were from England and the wife had worked in the old HP sauce factory, and an interesting conversation followed about how much better HP was that red sauce! Luckily we made our excuses and jumped into our taxi to Table Mountain! Managed to avoid the queues, which can be quite bad if you don't pre-book! I may not have mentioned but after my trip in a cable car in Malaysia, I hate cable cars!!! Luckily we managed to get to the top of Table Mountain without any problems! It was a perfectly clear day and after making our way though all the Japanese and American tourists taking selfies we managed to have a nice wander across the top of Table Mountain. We walked all the way to Maclears Beacon and back away from the normal tourist route it was well worth while , we saw some fantastic views and wildlife. On our return we jumped on the tourist hop on bus to Camps Bay where we picked up a taxi to Kirstenbosch Gardens, big mistake as he took us the long way round, hey it wasn't that bad as it was still only £15 but it was the principle! Hey ho, live and learn! We then proceeded to have a lovely walk around the botanical gardens, stopping off for a great ham and cheese toastie and beer on the way round! Since we had payed for a day ticket on the tourist bus we decided to jump on again at the gardens and ride it to Camps Bay where we knew we could pick up a taxi to take us back to the hotel! Although the bus took a bit longer than expected we had a lovely trip via the coast road. At arrival at the guest house after a quick change we headed off to the Black Sheep restaurant. This was one of the first restaurants I booked when I knew we were coming to Cape Town and have to say I'm glad I did! It's only a five minute walk from the hotel. The atmosphere was of a small bistro restaurant , the menu changes daily and had a great selection of wines. We started with a pint of lumberjack beer and a G&T (with soda instead of tonic) for Fi, beer was really good, a traditional UK winter style ale although served cold. We decided on fried sweetbread starter for me and asparagus rolls for Fi. This is the first time I have had sweetbreads I have to say I loved them, even Fi tried some! Mains were hanger steak and chicken both were fantastic! It really was a great meal!! Just had time for a quick complementary sherry before bed !
