Monday 25th May Day 4 Preston
Sour taste and real annoyance filled the mouth as we awoke. Never coming to Preston again, I swore.
The day was taken up with Golf , for me and Jeremy decided to rub salt into those wounds by playing with his usual verve. He plays of 18 (bandit, and bandit again!) and so from the start of our round, shows a level of skill better suited to a much lower handicap. After 9 holes he has 23 points: yes correct, 5 under! By the 13th he had scored 35 points, And was about 8 under. And this included 2 or even 3 net eagles as well as the odd birdie.
And then, guess what, the protection kicks in and we get a couple of bogey holes. I mean, I ask you, what he doing. He even claims I had miscounted his score at 41 points and that really he has only got 40; ha! But its 41 on re-count.
Now according to my estimate his handicap should be cut by at least 1.5 shots, maybe as many as 2. But no, the computer at Preston protects him by cutting it only by 1.1. So his playing handicap only falls to 16(?). Time for the CONGU police to hit Preston Golf Club and investigate I think!!
I would have to admit the course played well but I think a few words needs having with the designer. He left it with some pretty tricky greens, approaches to greens and green surfaces that swirl about to the consternation of any new comer. Master Braid has a lot to answer for!
Hopefully in Scotland I can find some quality courses to play on courtesy of the James Braid Association!
