Lerwick, Shetland Day 27 Wednesday June 17
So we have now arrived in Orkney and have settled in the campsite at Kirkwall. Given what we have seen today, my early booking of this site was very fortuitous. People have been turned away as it is full! Full? Well, not exactly. The problem is that the grass is so wet that motorhomes cannot be put on the grass - they may sink or get stuck following an awful spring. As it happens I had book 5 nights rather than the 2 I thought. Given that we had a free night, well that takes care of our stop on Orkney.
Our departure from Shetland was fine. Although we were one of the first to arrive we actually got on the boat almost last. This is explained buy the fact that we would leave it mid journey at Kirkwall after a trip of about 5 hours. In fact we were off third but who is counting!
Given the winds recently the crossing threatened to be, well rough. In the end it was only marginally uncomfortable. There was something of a swell, maybe 4 feet that caused the boat so shift about a little in the early stages but this soon settled down and most of the crossing was acceptable. I enjoyed a meal of a lamb Navarine that had a only a mild taste, unfortunately, but it did fill the gap! The rest was filled by reading and the occasional stare at the horizon.
