European Adventure 2017
Today was our last day in Prague and we have all gone our separate ways now. The Wilson are staying in in Czech, the Carnie's back to the UK for a week and we head back to London then on to Christchurch on Tuesday. We had a great night out last night though at a lovely restaurant which Lidka found for us and which was quite traditional. After a day of sightseeing and doing our own things to a degree we had all met up back at the apartment. Leicester was feeling a bit tired and went for a snooze. The apartment was a rather strange set up with one bedroom in the lounge, a second in the dining room and the third on its own but next to the kitchen. The Wilson's had the lounge bedroom and so we were all enjoying a drink and a chat there while Leicester slept. Lidka was painting her nails and the lads decided to paint Leicester's toes. One foot was complete and one toe of the second one when he stirred. It took a while til he noticed and then we all had a good laugh. A pretty red it was too! The challenge was then to wear sandals out for dinner which he did. The city is very compact and our apartment was about 200metres from the central Old Town Square. There is no grid pattern for the streets and so every time you go out you find yourself in another area you haven't seen before. Although cars are using the streets it is largely for pedestrians and we just enjoyed walking and poking our noses into alleyways and down narrow streets to see what was there. There are many ways to see the sights besides the usual hop on hop off buses. There are free walking tours where the leaders rely on tips to earn their living, or you can hire a Segway, a vintage car, horse and carriage, electric/pedal power rikshaw or finally as we did last night....a six seated bicycle! There is no shortage of entertainment anywhere as wherever you turn there seems to be buskers and street performers mixed in with the cafés and bars, souvenir shops etc. This morning we climbed the tower which houses the Astronomical Clock and checked out the view from the top before taking a tour of the Town Hall which is beside the clock and then underground. The town Hall consists of four individual houses joined together. The houses were acquired as the town grew and the Town Hall needed to expand. The underground was interesting; back in the 13th century Prague would regularly flood so a decision was made to raise it by 6 to 8 metres. As Prague had no defensive wall the original houses were built like mini castles with small windows and doors and with very thick walls. This was ideal when they lifted the city because all they did was to build on top of them and the original houses became the cellars or in the case of the Town Hall, the cellars of the four houses became part cellar and part prison. The food over here is largely meat orientated and often with dumplings. All the guys had pork knuckle last night which came with horse radish (grated). Leicester didn't think it was hot enough and so ordered more and the three blokes got stuck in. After chewing it for a moment or two, the reaction kicked in and it was so funny to watch. Still give them their dues they ate the lot! We have really enjoyed our time in Prague and of course it was invaluable having a Czech Chick with us! Being so central and feeling part of such a beautiful city was a great experience and one which will stay with us all for a very long time.

mum Lovely Prague. Would love to have seen you all on the six-seater. It must have been great fun
Jane Never seen one of those before. Guess you all had to agree on the direction. Were there some free peddlers??
Jo Kidd No free peddlers but the ones facing backwards found it eerie not seeing where they were going. We were flying along as we all peddled scattering people before us! Great fun!
