European Adventure 2017
The first day started off quite cool and then warmed up later but not before dropping a heavy shower of rain right at lunchtime. We had a fantastic day walking from our very central base in Prague around to the Staromestke square where there were many buskers but a couple which caught our eye were two guys were playing old medieval instruments called dudysaks which sounded a little like the bagpipes. Great fun to listen to for a while. As it was approaching the hour we found the Astronomical clock in the corner of the square and waited with the large gathering crowd to see what happened as it shimed. Right on cue the two little windows at the side opened as the skeleton pulled the bell and the 12 apostles appeared one by one in the windows. Then the window shut and the clock chimed out to applause from the crowd. Further afield was one of the many bridges crossing the Vltava River. The most famous one is the Charles bridge with its statues of saints and other notables and a gate at each end. This led on to the Prague Castle called Hradcany which is huge and not really like a castle as we know it but is where the President and all the government officials carry out their duties. Beside that is a beautiful St. Vitus cathedral which was well worth a visit. There were so many more highlights along the way that I cannot possibly remember them all but Prague is such a beautiful city with its terracotta tile roofs, cobblestone streets, mosaic footpaths, magnificent architecture with pastel coloured walls. That night we wandered the local streets and saw the buildings lit up. Live music drew us to a a lovely little restaurant where we sat outside and enjoyed the mild temperature, the passing crowds, wonderful company and nice food. And thanks to the magic of ear plugs we all woke up this morning after a good nights sleep.
