It has been a busy few days getting ready to start at Amazon. We had to attend orientation at 6:45AM on Sunday morning, then turn around and start our first 10 hour shift monday at 6PM. We knew we were going to work the night shift so we had been preparing by going to bed as late as we could to acclimate to a night work schedule. This one early day really messed up our inner clock. I'm thinking the rest of this work week will be spent on caffine and energy drinks.
The Amazon warehouse is HUGE, about one million square feet of stuff, and people scurring all over the place in a controled chaos that will get product out to the customer the next day if they want it. It's exiting to think we will be a part of that chaos in the coming weeks. We will start by working four ten hour days, Sunday thru Wednesday and the hours will increase during the holiday peak times. Dennis got a schedule called a "donut" where he works Sunday and Monday, has Tuesday and Wednesday off, then back to work Thursday and Friday with Saturday off. We both work 6PM to 4:30AM, but since our days differ, we won't be able to car pool.
As with most sucessful .coms, Amazon is a customer and employee centric company. Our orientation consisted of safety, safety, followed by pre-work stretching, followed by more saftey, followed by the prerequisite sexual harassment and loss prevention films. It's a big corporation and they have standardized rules we all have to follow because if we didn't, that chaos I observed would not be so controlled.
Judy should be able to handle the physical part of this job just fine if she can get past the stairs and bending over to lift things. The next few days will tell all.
