Well, after sitting in an hour of traffic in Prague, we set out for Rothenburg ab der Tauber. Jen and I felt a sense of relief once we crossed into Germany. Finally, we would be able to communicate. Rothenburg is a walled city about 1 1/2 hours east of Heidelberg. It's one of my favorite cities in Germany. We found our hotel with no problem - amazing after the first two attempts in Poland and Czech!! Our hotel was okay, not as nice as it looked on the website but it would only be one night. The owner was a very nice old man. He told us to park in front of the hotel to offload our luggage and then showed me where to park. That's when the trouble started!
Somehow I had managed to lock the key in the Skoda!!! After calling Avis and speaking several times with the Roadside Assistance representative, I was told the only thing I could do, besides waiting for 4 days for a key to be delivered, was to break a window! Unbelievable! I asked him if we could just get a locksmith to come by and he said no. The hotel owner called one of his locksmith friends who came by to try to unlock the door. He was about to unlock it when the company that Avis sent to break the window arrived. The two men shooed the locksmith away and promptly broke the front passenger window of the Skoda.
What a nightmare! We made arrangements for a new car in Heidelberg and had the window breakers tape a plastic window for us.
Then, it was off to explore Rothenburg and me apologizing a thousand times! That night after dinner, we went on a Night Watchman's Tour in the rain.
More exploring in the morning and then after lunch, we headed off to Heidelberg with our Skoda and it's broken window....
