After what seemed like days traveling to Frankfurt, we finally met up with Nacia and got our rental car - a "beautiful" Skoda Roomster! For those of you who don't know what a Skoda is, it's a Czech Republic-made auto. We set off down the Autobahn for our next destination - Boleslawiec, Poland, home of the world-famous Polish Pottery. We arrived in Boleslawiec at around 1:45 am and started looking for our hotel. Relying on the directions from the hotel website, we must have driven for 2 or 3 hours (literally) searching. We stopped at a couple of gas stations and my two navigators, Jennifer and Nacia, attempted to ask for directions. Very difficult to understand Polish!!! Finally, at around 4:00 am, we saw a sign for our hotel. We pulled into the parking lot and knocked on the door and rang the doorbell but no one answered!!!
We were so exhausted that we decided to just sleep in the Skoda until someone stirred in the hotel. That happened at around 7:00 am. We walked in and told the sweet Polish girl that we had reservations for the previous night. She showed us to our room and asked what time we would like breakfast. We told her we needed to sleep and that 11:00 would be great. We all grabbed 3 hours of sleep, showered and one of us changed and the other two put on our same old clothes!!! Down to breakfast and then out for a short day of shopping and sightseeing.
Shopping in Boleslawiec has changed a little. With the declining dollar, the shops are empty and no one wants to be paid in US dollars anymore. The other difference I noticed was that at the border, there are no longer any guards. We just drove right through. I remember going to Boleslawiec by bus and having to wait in the bus for up to 2 hours before the Polish guards would let us through!!
After an early dinner and a Polish beer back at the hotel, we retired for our first full night's sleep in 2 days. We awoke the next day, stopped at a couple more stores and then we were on our way to the Czech Republic!!
