After having spent an hour trying to get out of the city centre in our hire car, and 3 more hours on the motorway we finally made it to Canberra on time to visit the Australian parliament and Royal Mint. We were advised not to bother going to Canberra but we wanted to see it for ourselves and make our own judgement. It is one of the only 4 planned cities in the world and we were quite amazed at how modern the parliament was and also how accessible it was. We were allowed to park underneath it, and were also allowed to wander freely around the parliament by ourselves, including going onto the roof. We did have a guided tour however and it was very interesting to learn about their political system.
As we had only planned a day trip to Canberra we only had time to briefly visit the Royal Mint, where we made our very own Australian dollar coin, and the Australia Museum before having to head back to Sydney. The car ended up causing us more hassle then it was worth when it took us another hour once back in the city to try and find somewhere to park- in the end we put it in an overnight carpark and was looking forward to dropping it back the next day. Sydney really isn't the easiest city to drive around. All in all it was a worthwhile trip to go and see the capital.
