I went to church today. I received an orientation handbook from the International Student House and in the back there were places of worship. The first one on the list was American Church in London so that's where I went. I had a hell of a time getting there. You see the church is located off of the Northern Line (on the tube) which follows this figure eight pattern over and over and it's extremely difficult to get where you want to be. I had to switch trains about three times until I was finally on the right branch of the Northern Line and heading in the direction of the church.
Luckily when I emerged from the tube I was just a short distance from the church and made it there 15 minutes early. It's a nice building...very modest, but not shabby. I actually stood up and introduced myself when they asked for newcomers to stand (I hate doing that but I forced myself to). The paster is also from California and we exchanged locations.
After church was a coffee hour and people were so friendly. I spoke to many of them (mostly Americans) but really connected with a woman originally from California who now lives and works here. She's some years older than me but she looks about my age and I have a feeling that we're in the same frame of mind so it's easy to talk.
It just so happens that today was the newcomers lunch so I was invited to join. The food was great (nice that I didn't have to pay) and everyone was really welcoming. Kate, my new friend, is also new to this church (she's only attended 4 time previous to today) so we sat together.
After the service and coffee and lunch, I just think I was meant to be there. I mean I got myself out of bed this morning and walk out into a foreign city BY MYSELF, found the right tube station (on the crazy Northern Line) and found my way to this church where everyone wants to know about me and involve me in their lives. I've never been to church by myself before but I wasn't alone. I'm just so happy and I want to continue to be a part of that church.
Church aside, I had a day to myself just walking around, not knowing where I was going. London is really a great place...there is so much to see and do and it's beautiful. I could really see myself living here someday. There is a lot to offer here.
I start school tomorrow. I'm a little nervous...but I'm sure I'll be fine. Wish me luck and keep me in your prayers.
