So we've arrived in Savusavu where I'm doing my first elective placement. The flight over was amazing though slightly scary - this tiny little propeller plane with 20 seats and the captain does the safety info. The views at dawn were spectacular! It was a little unnerving flying through clouds but the plane bounced along quite happily through them. Zoe and I were picked up by a taxi (Hamish managed to get himself on a flight to the other side of the island) and taken to the apartment, which is really nice. 3 bedrooms, kitchen, big lounge and big balcony as well. We met Becca, a Sheffield medic doing her elective here and filled us in on life in Savusavu. I think I'm going to have to full embrace "Fiji time" and chill...
There's one main street with shops, restuarants and a market, which Zoe is very excited about - it might be the only place here to get fresh fruit and veg. The trip to the supermarket to get food was a bit of a shock - lots of rice, spices and then a small selection of overpriced tins and frozen meat. No veg (apart from onions and potatoes) no fruit, no eggs (though the doctor's wife gave us a fresh dozen from her parents' chickens). Cooking will be a challenge!
The beach is a good 15 minute taxi ride away along a very bumpy road, and officially belongs to a very posh resort which hosts guests like Elizabeth Taylor but none of them ever venture down to the beach so we have it all to ourselves! I think a lot of days will feature hospital in the morning (clinic times are 8.30am-1pm), lunch in town and afternoons on the beach - I might eventually get a tan to rival Jamie's?!

Iain Hello Bambi. Hope you're settling in nicely now and it has stopped raining. I was looking at the map and couldn't help getting jealous about the amount of reefs. Looks like diving heaven. I had a lovely day on Sunday thanks to Jamie and Amy. Better go. got a shout
