Given that Zoe, Hamish and I had all felt a bit sick last week, we'd pretty much decided that Taveuni was a bad idea. But everyone we spoke to had another compliment to add: "it's so beautiful you won't want to leave", "the waterslide was the best bit of my whole trip" etc so when we got back from drinks in town on Friday night we packed our bags, slept for 3 hours and then got a taxi down to the ferry at 4.30am.
I think we all pretty much slept the 5 hour trip there which was surprisingly quick. It's easy to see why Taveuni is the Garden Island - so many different plants and forests with no towns, only little villages. We decided to walk to where Vicky and Jess were staying (a good 45 minutes in 11am sunshine) but we were pretty grateful to be offered a free lift by a passing farmer in his truck.
We decided to go and search for the famous natural waterslide the Lonely Planet liss as one of the top things to do in Fiji. However, nothing has really been repaired since the cyclone in March, which included signs to the waterslide (and sadly the famous International Dateline sign which has Today/Yesterday - I've been wanting to jump from side to side since I was a kid!). So we wandered lots, got directions from at least 4 people and after about an hour, found what we guessed to be the waterslide. We did a little bit and then gradually climbed higher (though wwalking uphill through a litle river is big challenge!) and did more and more of it. Later a couple of locals arrived to show us how it's done - one kid basically surfed down part of it!
In the evening we went to a buffet at a local resort and had so much food! Sadly there was no time to see "the most beautiful waterfalls in Fiji" as they were on the opposite side of the island and buses are sporadic at best but the waterslide more than made up for it!
Now our last week in Savusavu before doing some island hopping and the Coral coast!
