Hamilton Island & Whitsundays
After 14 hour bus trip and a fry up to ease the pain of the journey, we were ready for the arrival of big sis and Tan. "We're not being funny" but we hid behind the airport desk for a good ten minutes before they decided to stroll off the plane! Emotional reunion followed, great to see them!
We were then shown our transport for the next few days, a buggy (later named Bug) that with four girls in reached a max speed of about 5mph, and that was on flat surface! We were spoilt rotten with a house, complete with a bed each, towels and our own little garden which came complete with our own parrots and peacock! To thank them we decided to cook a meal. Halfway through the chicken and veg got unnaturally frothy and after a sample there was a distinctive taste of lemon when we realsied that instead of oil, lemon fresh washing up liquid had been used!!! Being the honest people we are, we tried washing it, which only made more bubbles! Ky and Tan noticed but still ate it (bless them), insisiting it was fine!
Being in the tropics in the summer, it rained all the time (did anyone else know this as we just though oz was always hot!) so the most had to be made of the bar at the resort and happy hour. Rest of time was spent sleeping and eating, not forgetting a break for neighbours! Wed night came..the 'club' night! So out we went where we met 65 year olds and the island inbreds! Few vodkas later it seemed like a really good idea to drive bug home, even after the curfue of 1am! Kyra "wasn't being funny" but didn't think it was a good idea to drive past the police station, fearing FBO'd (First Boat Off), Tanya didn't listen and continued, head out the side as she couldn't see through the screen! We just about made it when Denise realised she'd forget her card, so back we went breaking Island law once more. Luckily it wasn't the one night a week the police make a visit so we made it home!
We thought that due to bad weather on the Island, the boat trip was going to be fantastic, but Tanya's face was a picture when we met our Skipper informed us winds of 25 knots, terrible rain and 4ft waves were to be expected. Overcoming the urge to check into a hotel, Ragamuffin II set sail and we made ourselves comfy in our room/kitchen/communal area....3 in 1!! Conveniently located near both toilets we had a natural aroma the whole time. Walking on the boat proved a little difficult for all of us and we swear the Skipper crashed waves deliberatly which soaked us and made us scream embarrassing ourselves infront of the rest of the gang! Our group was a diverse bunch, made up of Dangerous Dave who "liked what he saw downstairs" when he walked in on Ky, Action Man and the most boring/big nosed couple in the world. So we made friends with Chris and Ben (the crew), resulting with us getting the best seats on the boat and regular cups of tea! We got our sea legs and managed to manouver around the boat (with only a few falls) to avoid the rain. The scenery and Whitehaven wasn't quite the postcard we had seen but we still had a fantastic time. We also went diving. Ours wasn't great due to bad visibilty but we did get to do a James Bond style entry into the water. Ky and Tan also tried a dive, cracking us up with comments like "do you always hold hands under water" and "I couldn't do the breathing thing - I didn't realsie you could breath out"!! So despite the one minute showers and coffin beds, fun had by all!
Denise was woken on her birthday with the girls and Chris singing to her followed by presents! Then it was over to the resort complete with swimming pool, jacuzzi and a bar with cocktails...heaven! Shock, it rained, but we amused ourselves with pool games, nice to see we are acting our age!! Then it was back to the boat where banners had been put up and cake was waiting, so lovely! It was the boring girls birthday too but we made sure everyone knew who number one birthday girl was! Back to Airlie where Ky and Tan experienced their first hostel living, they coped remarkably well and 'moo' even fitted in with the jungle surronds! Drunken night followed, meeting up with the Sweedish girls (another birthday stealer) and Martin, with lots of vodka, cocktails and a few to many jagerbombs, ending in a histerical call to Jacqui at 4am. Opps!! Still a wicked night where a band actually played 'Walking In Memphis' at last. Next morning hangovers were terrible (we still blame the hotdog) but still didn't stop us acting out Dirty Dancing as our dorm looked like the huts. Tanya didn't quite get the line "your not worth it" but after three takes it was perfected! Sadly had to say bye to Ky and Tan, gutted they were going, tears were shed. Them being there was great and had such a wicked time! Thanks girls for being our... couriers, feeders, drinking buddies, present suppliers and putting a roof over our head for a few days! Love you loads. xxxxxx
