Hello and greetings from Byon Bay. A wonderfully extrodinary little place known for its love and enthusiasm of alternative lifestyles. To sum up the town its a carnival of organic cafe's, surfers with board under arm, hypie shops, gorgeous pasteries and bakeries, yoga classes, meditation courses, alternative therapies and music follows you wherever you go.
Unfortunately my dreams of lulling in the sun were quashed by the heavy storms that filled the skies for the first two days of our visit. Thunder and lightening welcomed us to New South Wales (NSW). Nearly three weeks travelling south, approximately 1200 miles and we've finally entered a different state. I think that statistic illustrates the sheer siza of this country. The east coast alone is eleven time the size of the UK. So, we've come along way to get here and it was worth the journeys!! Again we landed on our feet with accomadation, a little beach house called Middle Reef was our home for four nights, and we pretty much had the place to ourselves (I'll tell you about the weirdos we went out with last night on our return.)
Byron's fabulous peoples make for such great people watching and there's basically about three groups. You've got your hypie types that no doubt have taken too many drugs and walk around strumming guitars or talking random gibberish, then theres the opposite 'pure' people who meditate eat organic and probably follow every fad that comes along, the last group is of course the surfers. Surfing is part of everyday life here, everywhere you look is a board shop or a guy heading off to the beach. It's a lovely town and being part of it for only a few days has sparked creativity within both Sam and I. I've been thinking about the future alot and doing lots of writing and Sams spent the afternoons making jewellery in the bead shops (so expect these as presents!!) The evenings here are equally as relaxed. Byron tends to get a lot of really good live bands, last night there was a type of Indian Funk band playing (very Hotel Costes).
We've visited the oldest lighthouse in Australia which also happens to be situated at the most easterly point on mainland Oz. At the edge of cape Byron proudly stands the lighthouse, its beam visible for 27 nauticle miles lights up the sky at night and circles the darkness above our beach house. On our way we tried to spot some celebrities as U2 and the Rolling Stones both have places around the cape and its not hard to see why, we spotted dolphins and hunted for humpback whales that are regulars in these waters as they migrate south to the Antartic. The southerly views down past Tallow beach were breathtaking, and we could've spent the day up there daydreaming....bliss.
Half way through our stay the clouds cleared to deliver brilliant blue skies and the powerful sun. It was time to hit the beach, and so we did. The surf here is so good and we took a few brave dips in the choppier waters diving through the waves as they rolled in. Unfortunatly, I was having so much fun I didnt keep applying the cream (which is a must out here - what with the huge hole in the ozone layer over Oz) and now Im burnt!! Only on my chin though - bizaar. Sams also been stung by a wasp on her bum, well were guessing it was a wasp but it could've been a spider!!
Well thats it from Byron, next stop is the Hunter Valley for the vineries and wine tasting!! Hip up! Bring it on!!!!
