Hey people, well its been very hectic other the past few days - travelling is not relaxing I tell ya but there's been some absolutely incredible moments in our recent stage of Australia adventure. Since I last updated this we've stayed with our friends from Mackay that we met in Thailand. It was pure bliss for three days as Nathans house was gorgeous, and it was great to stay with a family rather than living the backpacker lifestyle all the time. We went out on their towns Saturday night with their mates which was ace, dined down at the marina, visited an amazing pub on the cliff overlooking the south pacific islands, and cooked fresh fish (caught by Nath) on the BBQ!! We said our farewells and boarded the Greyhound to our next stop Hervey Bay! The best thing about about travelling is meeting different people from all over the world and we've now got contacts pretty much everywhere!
So we rolled in after a long overnight journey to Hervey Bay. The town itself is purely used as a gateway to Fraser Island so there wasnt too much to do there but we enjoyed relaxing on the first day and preparing ourselves for three days camping - aggghhh! Well, Im glad to say we've both now been converted into camping lovers, all that back to nature malarchy worked its wonders and I even enjoyed the bush toilet! We landed ourselves a really good group consisting of three Germans including a crazy forty something named Eika who looked as scary as she was and came from a family of 13! Then we had three Swedes and the rest English including Pretentious Pete from Sailisbury. Fraser Island itself is absolutely stunning (as I'm sure you can see from the pics) it's the largest sand island in the world and offers far far more than you would imagine a island entirely made from sand could; beautiful fresh water lakes and creeks, deep green bush, the fiesty Dingos, crazy offroad track, shipwrecks, champagne pools and sevety five mile beach which is used as a motorway!!
Our favourites included the champagne pools at the north of the island which are basically deep pools carved by the sea into rock and froth when the waves crash into them causing the "chapagne" effect. Unfortunately, Sam drunk lots but didn't even get a wee bit tipsy!! So we cracked open some wine instead!! Indian Head was my best place by far, its a huge cliff face at the top of the island and while most people walked the track I joined the boys on a rock climbing adventure to the top - and the view was amazing!! Below within the crystal blue waters you could watch rays, turtles and sharks swimming around!! Our evenings were spent beneath the stars, we cooked on the stove and shared stories along with a nice glass of wine, Eika let me try some of the red she'd bought from the vineries in the Hunter Valley (NSW) and I'm now back onto the red stuff!! Sam and I have also decided to do the wine tour when we get down to that neck of the woods, which could be fun!! ;) All in all we had a fab time on Fraser, and I'd do it all again if I could. Mind you after three days without a shower, I was glad to get back to our hostel - only to find all the hot water had gone gggrrrrrrr!!
So that's my little installment for now as Sam's going to fill you in on the rest shortly!! It's the Melbourne Cup tomorrow which is the equivelent of Cheltenhams Gold Cup or The Grand National so I'm going to put a bet on and hope I'm lucky!! Fingers crossed.
Take care guys, we miss and love you all lots
