Saturday morning and I can't sleep in! The sun is too bright. But I guess I shouldn't complain when it's gorgeous and sunny in January :)
Work has been crazy crazy which is good because I've pretty much been able to jump right into things and get situated. It's the beginning of the year and everyone in South Africa recently went back to work after three weeks of vacation (apparently even the post office goes on holiday) so we have been getting a bunch of new jobs from clients. I finished up working on a project for Soccer Laduma (which is an extremely popular South African magazine) and wrote up a proposal for H2O, which is another client that we work closely with. I got to design a leaflet that is to be placed in newspapers across the country. I didnt get to go to the meeting with my boss, but apparently they really liked my ideas on the layout. I had to research which newspapers it should be placed in, but that was the only boring part! Now they have me working on planning two events (one here and one in Johannesburg) for the 10 year anniversary of Soccer Laduma. It's a really really big task because at both events there will be over 500 people, but I have a lot of time to work on it. I think I got really lucky with interning at this time because there was another intern who was working on this event planning, but she left. So now I get to do it! It's stressful at times, but I enjoy it...and I don't mind too much that I'm working for free. I'm sure my boss doesnt mind either . The theme for the events is "The City of Goal" so we are creating a city essentially by building massive structures that look like modern buildings which will be placed all along with walls, and there will be a stage in the center which will represent the stadium. The only bad part is that I wont even be here to attend it! I'm leaving at the end of March and it's scheduled for sometime in the middle of April. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to come back!
Last night my two good friends from Brooklyn had a braai because they are leaving tonight to go back home. It's sad, but it's pretty common for people to come and go because we are all international students doing various internships or courses at University of Cape Town for only a few months at a time. There are some people who are staying here the whole year, but most students are here for 3-6 months.
Well, I hope everyone is doing well back in the states! Thanks for reading..If you've made it this far then I am very happy!
By the way..I chose the picture of a Gorilla this time because it reminds me of my german friends who went camping last weekend and a bunch of baboons stole his food. I thought it was pretty funny.
