We did reach Venice on Thursday as expected and spent the whole day walking around the city through the maze of little streets and bridges crossing the many canals. It was really nice to see some of the sights for real. There was the famous San Marco square, which was filled with very cocky little pigeons. You could walk right up to them and they wouldn't even move.
We also inquired about a gondola ride, but these are just so ridiculiously priced! They asked us a 100 euro for a 5 km ride. So we decided that taking a photo of a gondola up close was good enough and spent only a fraction of the money in a good Italian restaurant. Funny they don't call them Italian restaurants here... We have wondered if they have pizza hut here or if this would be sacreligious.
The day after that we had a big day of biking ahead of us. We covered 105 km southwards and the day after that (today) we headed for Ravenna. Here we went to the Ravenna War Cemetery and we visited the grave of my grandfathers brother Leon.
There was a wreath made out of poppies was hanging on his tombstone, that I think must have been hung there by my uncle when he visited a couple of years ago. It held his picture and said the words: 'always remembered, with love from home'.
We are now making our way further South to try and catch up with Sira's sister by the 28th in a camp ground in Montelparo. After a few days of relaxing there, we'll head further to Rome.
