Safari was THE best thing i have ever done. Must admit wasnt looking forward to it after what happened on thursday but the weekend was amazing!
The six of us got picked up on friday from our house at 7am by our tour guide (Davis) in a huge green jeep with detachable roof.
We begain the 7 hour journey to the serengeti. On the drive to the campsite where we would spend our first night we saw: girraffes, elephants, leopards, hippos, baboons, warthogs, zebras, hyenas etc...we arrived at the capsite just as the sun was setting and put up our tents. We soon realised that we wouldnt get a reassuring answer from Davis when we asked him if the campsite (in the middle of the serengeti with no fence) was safe at night as he just replied-'ill tell you in the moring' and told us never to leave our tents at night- even if we needed the loo. Had a gorgeous dinner cooked for us and went to bed, but not to sleep. Lying in our tent at night we heard LIONS prowling round our tents so we tryed to lie there as silent as we could be. After a sleepless night we finally plucked up the courage to open our tents at 5.30 am for breakfast and Davis didnt seem that suprised about the lions. We then went to empty our very full bladders- the sun hadnt quite come up and so we took a tourch to the toilets. When annie was in the cubicle and wer were all waiting outside a bat flew at us and so we barged into annies cubicle to try and escape said bat but it followed us into the cubicle! Screaming we left the cubicle, accidently locking annie inside with the bat. This successfully woke us up for the rest of the day.
We informed Davis that our aim of the day was to try and find the lions that had joined us at our campsite that night-he said no problem. After about 2 hours of driving round the serengeti seeing countless zebras, girraffes etc we began to loose hope of seeing a lion...
Then Dvis spotted her- a lioness having a nap on a rock. He drove the jeep so close to her and we have loads of amazing pictures of her. Davis told us that if the lioness was here then her cubs and the king wouldnt be far away and so he started up the jeep. We were all standing on the seats and as he drove off my safari hat blew off andf landed about a metre away from the lioness- i accepted that i would never see the hat again and it wasnt worth getting eaten by a lion over (despite being a really nice one from accessorise!) Then two minutes later another safari vgan drove up to us and they handed me my my hat!!!! I have no idea how..???!!!
Then out of no where 12 LIONS walked up the road and right past the jeep. Was mind blowing! they were in no rush and slowly made their way to chill on pride rock. Satisfied we made our way back to the campsite for lunch and as we were late Davis was doing 80MPH across the serengeti plains with us standing on the seats, heads out the roof hanging on for dear life (sorry mum) was so much fun!!!!!!
After lunch we headed to our campsite on the ngorongoro crater! Our campsite here was full of zebras and there was one lying on the ground wounded and bleeding which was worrying as this was bound to atteact the lions! Davis asked us if we wanted him to tell us how many people died at this camsite everyday...and we weren't sure if he was joking our not as it did seem like a very likely possibility! Luckily we made it through the night and on sunday we were determined to see a rhino to make our big 5 list complete:Leopard, Buffalo, Elepahnt, Lions and Rhino. We drove round for what felt like forever looking for a rhino but could see one anywhere. We also came face to face with an elephant who looked like he was going to come tip over our jeep-Davis got scared and quickly started up the engine-none of us wanted to end up like the guy in mount meru hospital! Just as we were loosing all hope of seeing a Rhino Davis started going really fast in the jeep again abnd we knew he had spotted something! We managed to get really close to a rhino and this is apparently so rare as there are only 23 rhinos in the whole of the ngorongoro crater...even davis got excited about ti and you could tell how proud he was of himself. We began the long journey home and were alkl admiring our sun tans...when we got home and had showers though we realised this was just dust from not showering for 3 days...oh well.
I dont think this blog does the weekened justice and iv missed out so much but what i havent explained im sure the photos and videos we have will.
