Jambo Rafikis!
Had an amazing birthday! Went to placement in the morning- was asked by the doctor if i could dress a big wound on a little boys arm, i thought he was asking me to see if i could do it but it turns out he asked me because he didnt know what to do...he kept asking me what everything in the dressing pack was for (to be fair i was pleasently suprised to have a dressing pack out here) i didnt have any saline to clean it or anything though so he made me clean it with iodine which must have hurt like hell..he then asked what the gauze was for and i was like 'to dip in the saline which we dont have...'
Anyway...after placement we all met up in our favorite Afracafe for drinks and cake and then headed back to the house. In the evening had a massive BBQ and we made a big bowl of konyagi punch! I was then presented with a HUGE birtday cake that witness had made me and a lovely card from the work the world staff. After playing ring of fire and drinking lots of konyagi punch we headed to Via Via.
There was a big mix of people at via via-locals,tribesmen and a suprisingly large amount of mzungus-alot of which were on their gap yars. We spent the night dancing on the open air dance floor uner the stars, turning down marriage proposals. The music started off as tanzanian music but at 12 'o' clock changed to chart music so we sang along surrunded by confused looking locals. Was an amazing night.
On friday we had a well deserved lie in and then went to the local orphanage. The orphanage is in the middle of a bad part of town and so our taxi there was chased by people shouting 'MZUNGUUU!!!!!!!!' We got there and were jumped on by 20 of the most playful and adorable children i have ever met. I took the my left over birthday cake which went down extremely well and they loved our cameras- i have so many photos. Spent two hours catching the kids as they jumped off tables onto me, pulled my hair and insisted on being carried around we were shattered by the end. We bought some cooking oil, flour and squash to give to baba and bibi-the old couple who own the orphanage. They are truly amazing people and even though they struggle to provide for the kids there the kids still get fed, have a bed to sleep in and get to go to school whihc is alot better than the alternative. One day they hope to buy a bigger property so that they can give a home to more children. We are going to try and visit at least once a week. I ahve so many amazing photos that im going to try and upload now...
Emmanuel update: Emmanuel has told us that he hopes to marry a mzungu, when asked where he was going to meet this mzungu he replied 'oh i dont know, probably in the WTW house.' .....get in line ladies!
