Day 1 in BA
After a hectic day one, following a 16 hour flight plus a full day tourist trekking, we began our South American tour with a Corona in a Gay bar called Pride, which unfortunately didnt rival Canal Street. We then spent the afternoon in the Sunshine walking the streets of San Telmo, visting the markets and street vendors, stopping only for Empanadas y Quilmes, little did we know Jen would need an Empanada stop every 2 hours!!!
We then stopped to see a tango band, falling in love with a Tango singer who serenaded us whilst we contemplated another drink break.
Wandering along the river we came to the Puerto Madera area, which I commented reminded me of Salford Quays, until Jen corrected me that it was in fact more reminiscent of Canary Wharf. In front of the docks Jen sipped a Cafe con Crema far from quickly as we discovered that the Argentinians are more laid back than the French.
We ended with our first steak and Malbec in the Palermo region, after Jen's map reading skills took on a scenic route where we stopped by a lovely old aregentinian lady who commented that I looked only 18!!
Back to the hostel for an early night after the mammoth flight.
Day 2
Up at Noon and Cafe con Leche con medialunas in the City, breakfast starts late as most argentinas skip it and head straight for lunch. After this we head to the Playa de Mayo, that is after we navigated to the wrong Plaza de Mayo, who names two squares the same with just a date to differentiate???
The plaza looks onto the Xasa Rosado where Evita addressed the crowds. I felt moved and exhilarated as Jennifer sang Dont cry for me Argentina as we toured the grounds.
Next onto 4 cathedrals to ensure that we carried out our Catholic duties before heading to Manzana de las Luces where we saw some Antique fairs. After some local assistance, we navigated out way to the Cafe Tortoni, where we ate and drank amongst famous film star potraits. It wasnt until I read that the tourist cafe was developed by a Frenchman that I realised that I loved the place, i love the french!!
After a quick restbite at the hostel, we rushed out to a Tango show, prior to which we were enrolled in a class which taught us that Tango was more than just a dance, it requires a Tango face, some mastered better than others. After dinner and the show, we grabbed a cab to a club where the aforementioned Tango singer led his orcestra. Drinking Fernet or white spirit to those who dont know Argentina, we listened to the tango preparing for a later dance, as the Tango teacher says when asked to dance, you never say NO!!!
Day 3
We awoke to the sound of rain, not what we wanted having just left Blighty, but with plenty of museums and culture in BA, we decided to visit the Evita museum, following the life of Eva Peron after a Empanada to start the day. After the culture break, we went in search of vitamins where we found a lentil and vegetable stew to tie us over in light of the 16hr overnight bus tour to Mendoza we were going to take. Faced with 16 hours, and inedible cardboard food we slept on our reclining camas awaiting the sight of the Andes to signal our arrival.
