Day 4
Arrving in Mendoza, we dropped off at the hostel to refresh before signing up for our first wine tour, an afternoon in las Bodegas. First stopping off to fuel the afternoon of wine with Tapas, we found the much recommended Tasca las plazas. However on acceptance of the dish of the day, Jen and I were faced with a pea green dish of Ravoli filled with spinach in a spinach sauce. Having refilled and received our intake of vitamins, we left for the afternoon of organised wine tasting. We visited Visdantes, the olive oil production site of Pajaja, Camilla and finally Al Antigua where we tried sweet wines Moscato and Oporto as well as the evil drink Grappa. Following an afternoon of drinking we were sent by recomendation to the Steak restaurant Don Martin, where we ate steak for four people accompanied by a bottle of Malbec. The rich food was enough to send us to sleep and so we crashed in anticipation for a busy Day 5.
Day 5
Today we moved to a new hostel, Lao, which is undoubtedly the most homely, helpful and South American of hostels you can find in Argentina. Here we left our luggage as we grabbed a taxi to Pulenta Estate. Greeted by a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, we had a fantastic wine tour of the amazing vineyard followed by a tasting of some fantastic wines. Purchases in hand and a little tipsy we left the estate at lunchtime to head back to the town, in time for 2 empanadas before we left for an afternoon of horse riding in the Andes. The views here were incredible as we were to be led through the foot of the Andes on horseback. Hillarious in itself we were walking and trotting through the fantastic scenary to return to an asado prepared for us accompanied by mate, vino and a an amazing view of the sunset and stars. A perfect day in Mendoza.
Day 6
Struggling today as a result of the wine and the hours of trotting, we spent a chilled final day in Mendoza completing our whistle stop tour of the beautiful region. We went for an amazing lunch at Azafran, a resturant where they let you select your wine from their cave, guiding you where necessary. Here we started our comida with an amuse bouche of a sopa of potato and truffle and a glass of Chardonnay, followed by a mixed salad to start and of course empanadas for Jen! Mains were fantastic but completed with an even better postre of chocolate torte and rasperry ice cream. The only negative here was the bat which seemed to let itself into the restaurant to fly around taunting Jen.
After this our afternoon of laziness continued as we wandered around the towm before heading back to the hostel to chill out before our night bus back to BA.
