The Murray River Tues 9th Aug 2011
What a fantastic place !!!!!! Weve just a fantastic week following the Murray River was here 2.5yrs ago in the van when it was so dry and sad looking Have now returned to see it fyull of water :-)
First nights stop is at a little spot called sherlock where we stubbled across a big gravel pit so have set up camp there for the night got the fire going nice bottle of red and relax, Got up in the morning to be covered by fog couldnt see a thing ..
From here we head off towards Lamaroo & Pinaroo nice little spots right on the SA/Vic border lunch stop then its off to set up for the night. Spending the night @ Loxton on the camp oval reserve good set up This is our first sighting of the River , nice walk around town and along the river banks :-)
Back on the road and off to Berri looked around town unfortunatly its been raining quite a bit so not getting to wander outside as much as we would like.. head up to the water tower lookout gives a great view all over the town and country side .
Off to set up camp for the night found a great spot called Black Box camp right on the river still raining but that doesnt deter us from getting a good fire going and relaxing by the river its so peaceful and quiet here :-). great nights camping .
Nxt day its Renmark, rain has stopped so gives us a chance to walk all around town and have lunch here .
Campoing tonight is on the river again at another camp reserve called Moorook, again very peaceful and such a lovely outlook over the rive , few houses here with a deli come everything store.
Now off to Wakerie lovely drive along the way was going to book into the Cpark for the night here but fully booked up so continued on Cadell and stumbled across the best oval camp reserve set up for campers even had their laundry open so got all the washing done. BBQ for tea and walks into the small town Found the most amazing bird sanctuary hidden away behind the bushes all the water has brought back all the bird life and the black swans were everywhere Loved this place !!!!..
Back on the road and stopping at Blanchtown for lunch river full up to the banks and full of birdlife hope it stays like this .
Spending the night at a fav spot from previous trip called Big Bend near nilldottie it has the best views of the river and surrounds, sunsets and quietness to take it all in .. Have fond memories of this place tho last time it came up very windy and we had to move into town during the night .. not so this time was very quiet still and peaceful..
Drove thru to Murray Bridge and headed down towards the coorong to stay at Lake Albert @ Meningie when were were here last it was bone dry have pics of it with nt a drop of water in the lake Now the water is lapping right up to the edge of the bank !!!! so special to see this Stayed at the Lake Albert CPark which is owned by Mark and Tanya who we met last time came back for a visit so was fantastic to catchup and chat with them again..
Then its off up to another favorite camp spot right on the river at Mannum !!! best location ever the river boats crawl on past, views over to the town fantastic spot loved this spot too ..
Packed up and put the Winnie onto the big barge to get across to Mannum, spend quite a few hours here looking around again. Found the best views of the river from the top of town at the lookout really shows how the river has come to life ...
So its now time to leave a great area this past week has been amazing to see the Murray in such a healthy state I hope that it stays this way for many yrs its such a awesome piece of australia and should be cared for ..
Now off to Strathalbyn for our last night befoire heading back to Victor Harbor Had a very nasty shock along the way was only a minute behind a horrid site of a car and truck rolled over Thank goodness all involved were ok stopped to help out were we could till ambo,s and police arrive but very scary to see this on the road ..
Last night and its at Strathalbyn, time to reflect back on the past week looking at the amazing river .. off now to Yankalilla to pick up Grants new Satelite dish before heading back to Victor Harbor..
