MOONTA BAY After a good look around the bottom tip of the Yorke Peninsular we are now heading up the other side to Moonta Bay
Mond 1st Aug have arrived at the park and settled in to watch the most stunning sun set across the water. Truely amazing !!!!
This town is very very interesting with so much history, it originated in the mid 1800,s with the discovery of copper with many many families imigrating out from Cornwell in the search of work and a better life..
The mines were set up and was a very thriving rich enterprize which turned Moonta Bay into one of the biggest copper exporters in SA evolved.
The town is steeped in so much fantastic history and wonderful old original buildings The miners back then came mainly from Cornwell hence the town was nicknamed a little piece of cornwell with the cornish pasty being the staple meal. Most of the community was of very religious methodist background and so 9 methodist church,s sprung up all over town and are still standing and used today.
Weve stayed a week here having a good look around town at the grand old buildings, and going thru the fantastic museum that shows so much of the history of the town and mines this now museum used to be the local school fantastic building . The bay itself is a lovely walk all the way around to Port Hughes and the caravan park sits right on the waters edge.
The weather has been a mixed bag first 3 days glorious !!!!! so calm sunny with the most amazing sunsets at night... then we got hit with 3 days of wild stormy wet windy days and nights, good time to catch up on some reading, paperwork and emails.
Last night a nice dinner at the beach bistro before packing up in the morning to finally finish our 9 weeks on the Yorke peninsular
Its been a great time spent exploring a lovely interesting part of South Australia..
Will up date with you our next part of our travels as it happens
