When we went to Phuket we were able to meet up with our mates, Chris and Lou, who were there on holiday. We did some bodyboarding in Kata beach, and spent time relaxing by the pool. We also had a couple of nights out in Patong, which is a mad town and so sleazy, but we had to see it. On one night we went to a rooftop club with great views and even a swimming pool, where we ended up playing volleyball with a couple of Russians.
Then the rain came and it was time to move on to Koh Phi Phi. We stayed for 4 nights in a back-to-basics wooden jungle hut (cockroaches included) and it only stopped raining the day we were leaving, so it was quite disappointing. It was a beautiful island and despite the weather we still had fun; we took a trek up to a high viewpoint where you could see almost the whole island. One evening we watched some Muay Thai boxing in a local bar and it looked pretty brutal. Some willing tourists also had a go in the ring.
So annoyingly on the first sunny morning on Koh Phi Phi we left on the boat back to Phuket. Here we did an amazing tour of the Phang-Nga area. We went through the bat caves and along the island cliffs in a canoe and it was such a relaxing way to see it all. On the tour we also visited the James Bond Island, where they filmed The Man With The Golden Gun, as well as a sea gypsy fishing village where all the houses were on stilts and were surrounded by mangrove forests.
