Arrived in Lima late afternoon after a very long day. Lima is set in a desert and the first impression is of dust, closely followed by the feeling that half the buildings are unfinished. The taxi ride to the hotel took 40 minutes and gave us a succession of vistas of Lima, ranging from shanty town to modern city. Even in Lima you see people in traditional Indian garb. Also striking is how small the Indians are, Matilda was surprised to find herself taller than full grown women!
After checking in (a real bureaucracy-fest) we went out for quoick bite to eat near the hotel. Lima is strikingly busy and noisy, with much tooting of car horns and general hubbub. We ate in a diner with a view out over a busy street before heading home for an early night - we needed to get up at 3.30 the following morning for a 6.40 flight to Cusco.
