Puno to Lima
Last day at altitude - we got up and spent the morning re-visiting the Yavari as Alison and Tilly and been too unwell the previous afternoon. To Angharad's great delight this time we met the captain of the ship as well who shook hands with us all. Angharad was proudly wearing her Yavari captain's hat which is her most valued souvenir of the trip.
After a quick lunch we checked out of the hotel and got into our taxi for the airport at Juliaca, about 40 mins ride. To our consternation, the driver got out after about 5 minutes and started checking all the wheels. This was then followed by frantic phone calls to his office. Communication via our very limited Spanish was impossible. He kept reassuring us it was alright and proceeded to drive like an absolute maniac. Fortunately the speedometer was broken as we were pleased nto to know the exact speeds. At one point he pulled out to overtake another vehicle travelling only marginally slower than us at maximum speed to be faced by a large lorry coming the other way. All four of simultaneously yelled "Nooo" and he braked and pulled back in. As Sam and Rory were due to arrive 30 mins after our departure by bus, there seemed to be the very real possibility of an accident in which we crashed head on into their bus, which would have been a very weird way to go. After 30 more minutes of white knuckle ride, we got to the airport somewhat rattled and very relived to be intact and checked in for our flight.
Views from the plane were spectacular and were capped by a series of volcanoes, one of which was smoking - see photo.
In Lima we had opted to stay in the centre this time rather than Miraflores, which turned out to be much more interesting. The hotel was charming and situated in a converted colonial mansion. We went out for meal in San Isidro in a buzzing restaurant in a city square - all in all agreat day!
