Arrived in hotel Captain Cook around 4pm. Went walking around town. Stopped by Resolution Park that looks over Cook's inlet. A bronze Captain Cook monument stands looking out to sea. Although he explored in 1778 on HMS Resolution he didn't actually come into Anchorage - sending ships master William Bligh. Ironic the inlet was named after Cook given he noted in his journal " nothing but a trifling point in geography has been determined".
Stumbled on the Lightning Speed Planet Walk. Scale model of each planet around Anchorage and scaled for walking distance.
Sad seeing all the native Alaskans drunk and hanging out in the parks. Guess things are the same around the world when generations feel displaced from their land.
Enjoyed local beer in Humpy's quite a famous tavern. Named after pink salmon that are also known as humpback salmon. Fun place.
Back to our room only to realise that the elevators run right alongside our wall. Michael spoke with concierge and they changed our room with no fuss.
Really weird when at 9.30pm no sign of darkness - will go dark around 11.30pm tonight. Fireworks on to mark 4th July.
Bags getting collected at 6am tomorrow morning ready for checkout at 9am. We head off into the Denali National Park tomorrow.
