Arrived in Icy Strait early this morning as we get ready to enter Glacier Bay. The channel was named by early mariners for the huge icebergs that they saw. Most of these came from the Grand Pacific Glacier but this glacier has now retreated icebergs are infrequent now in the strait.
Breakfast delivered to our suite so we could sit on our balcony watching whales. They didn't disappoint. We saw many whales with spouts of air and water and then their fins showing. We were told it is not the right season or waters for breaching as this is mating behavior in warmer waters.
The spouts are called "bubble betting" in humpback whales and how a group of whales come together to feed cooperatively. It is a choreographed sequence of of diving, bubble blowing and vocalizing. Once the group has formed they locate the school of fish and then blow out a string of bubbles that rise and then form a net around the fish. It helps a pod of whales feed efficiently.
