Sapphire Princess is larger than the other Princess ships we have been on. Very efficient embarkation. The Port staff came on board the train at Wasilla and checked our passports, boarding passes and health questionnaire. We were then issued our cruise cards to our Suite as we got off the train. Chad and Scott our two hosts on the train were exceptional and were a little like having Hamish and Andy (from Australian radio) entertaining us for 9 hours whilst making sure we were comfortable.
It was 9.5 degrees C in Whittier and raining. The warm weather we became accustomed to has disappeared - we had planned for this given we are scenic cruising around glaciers but we hope the rain clears so we have better views.
Our cabin valet came and introduced himself and brought us champagne to welcome us on board. Very civilized. Kirsten is happy as they have also brought us chocolate strawberries. Our suite has a lovely flower arrangement and fresh fruit. Very welcoming.
We had ship muster at 8pm where we went through safety and putting on our life jackets. I guess everyone takes it a little more seriously since the Italian liner hit rock earlier this year.
We had dinner in the Sante Fe dining room and admired Prince William Sound as we left Port as we dined. By 10.30pm we all decided we were too tired to do anything more than explore and get orientated to the ship and then go to bed. We will be scenic cruising for the next two days before we have 3 stops at Ports that were part of Gold Rush history.
