Finally got round to my second entry! I feel the food needs a mention, well Uganda isnt known for its cuisine.. haha matoke (plantain steamed and then mashed), posho (conflour and water mixed until solid), cassava and beans are all regularly on the menu. Being here almost 3 weeks, they dont taste half bad but it was a struggle to begin with! The chipattis and samosa's however are really delicious, never mind how much oil they've been fried in! On sunday we even learnt how to make our own chipatti's, they tasted good (certainly better then my own attempt at home) but not yet up to local standard. We added butter to our second attempt as we'd heard this would make them nicer.. turned out all we made was fried pastry haha didn't taste bad though!
The local language is much more widely spoken than we'd first thought, with some on the kids we teach speaking hardly any English at all. Only a few locals speak good English which wasnt what we'd thought beforehand and has certainly made life a tad more difficult. We have been assured we'll pick it up soon though!
On Saturday we were luckily enough to receive an invite (and a very warm welcome) to a traditional family ceremony. The head of the family had died so this ceremony took place to crown a new 'leader' and pass on any inheritance. Unfortunately it also in Luganda (local language) but the food afterwards certainly made up for it!
On Saturday night Vivian (a friend a fellow teacher) took us out to a rooftop bar in Mukono. Beer is drank by both women and men, with a premiership game tipically showing in the corner, loud Ugandan music and beautiful views over the town made it a lovely night! Also we ate goat on skewers, the verdict? Tough but tasty! Here, they also fry white ants and eat them. So yep, you've guessed it.. had to try one of those too! Didnt taste too bad considering, kind of like a raisin. But when a leg gets stuck inbetween your teeth your reminded why we dont eat insects!
On Sunday we were back at the schoolo watching some traditional African dancing in their amazing costumes of course. We also saw performances from the school choir and the drumming group. Not a bad Sunday at work!
But the big news (for me anyway) is that i'll be coming home over christmas! Ill be back in the UK from DEcember to January and so will have time to catch up and see you all then!
Lots of Love from Uganda xxxxx
