Hi Guys, it's been 3 days since my last blog entry....... Not a lot has happened because we decided to take a little extra time off in Point Samson which is so beautiful we didn't want to leave. We had a great time there! It is just far enough away from Karratha to make it feel like a little sleepy fishing village but it does have a huge port for comings and goings of the big ships.
I did tell you about the mishap at Karratha and the caravan park we were expected to stay in and the ripped awning etc. All is well now and whomever we offended has forgiven and left us be in peace. So on the first day in Samson I did what we never do for ourselves and I gave myself the permission to read all day, do my nails, give myself a pedicure and generally be a sloth. It was great! That night we went to dinner with our new friends Jan and Ross. They are a couple from Secret harbour in early retirement and enjoying life with all the freedom they can afford. It was half price T-bone night at the pub! Good night, lots of laughs and we learned many tips of the caravaning trade such the need for deflappers, hose connections and 'O'rings, dog friendly caravan parks, the 4 way tap spanner, chain to lock things up ( can't trust everybody). He looked after Pip for us one of the days because she had a little panic attack that we were gone for a few moments. We had a lovely time with them, it really is a sociable event caravaning!
We made our Haj to Meca (Dampier). I could not live with myself or face Lincoln again if I didnt make the trip to the salt stacks. Lincoln, this was for you! I was in heaven, we even got free samples of Dampier salt! The people there are extrordinarily friendly, their coffee is crap but thier overwhelming personalities and helpfulness made up for it. It was a gold coin donation to the coffee machine....how nice is that?We were given some sound advice so listen up, don't eat bananas or drink coke in areas with sandflies, they are attracted to potassium and those two things have a lot. Also to cover yourself in a mixture of baby oil and tea tree oil so the sandfies cannot uninate on you and cause the itching. Good advice I thought! We visited the Woodside LNG exploration site. It was amazing to say the least. It is a very impressive production and the fact that the country remains looking virtually untouched is a credit to the environmental impact management.
Hugh did try to do some fishing on the rocks as everybody is starting to worry that there has been no mention of the fantastic fishing up here. To be truthful, there are minimal fishing charters and they are booked solid for 3 weeks in advance. Anyone looking to make a killing will do well to bring a good size boat up here with a big open deck space and sell tickets to take people out fishing...Point Samson is desperate for it!
We left Samson this morning and travelled to just south of Broome to Barne Hill. It is a cattle station on the coast with primative but beautiful camp grounds. The vans are set up amongst the trees with great views and even better company, we met up with mum and dad tonight and dad had cooked his famous curry, we were very happy to get here. The 8 hours of solid driving took us through Port Headland ( no need to mention anything about it because I need to forget that Iwas ever there), Sandfire Road house which is about all it is and here to Barn Hill. On the road the scenery varried little. It went from no schrubs to sparce schrubs to thick schrubs to no schrubs to burnt schrubs and so on for 800 kms! The only variety was the Brahman Bull that would cross the road at their leisure, the Wallaby you would hope would not make a rash decision to end his life, the termite mounds that were decorated with hard hats, lots of eagles and hawks and of course endless blue skies.
Until the next installment, let me know if there is anything you would lkie me to include on the blog
