Helen's Travels
So much to update yet again, I\'m putting the lack of updates down to the rubbish African Internet access.
Right I\'m goign all the way back to the 19th March! I left Port Elizabeth with a couple of people for Hogsback. Hogsback is complete Lord of the Rings Territory, apparently Cat (you never know I may actually watch the films now!!) It was absolutely beautiful, the views were breathtaking. The day we got there we just chilled and climbed the treehouse. It was the wobbliest treehouse ever with half of the steps on the way up missing, but when at the top the view was well worth risking your life for! The next day we went on a 5 hour trek through the trees, valley etc to look at all the waterfalls. It was a massive walk on slippery ground and rock climbing at times. Luckily for us we acquried 3 dogs for the walk who barked at anything, really good for pointing out (and scaring) the monkeys!
After Hogsback we moved on to Coffee Bay. This was more like real Africa with lots of little round huts and people trying to sell you everything and anything that you really wouldnt want! We arrived at the hostel and after being shown around and being told that our room was \"over the river\" we got taken to the bar for a free drink. After we\'d finished our free drinks it became apparent why they were so keen to give us it as we literally had to trek through the river, backpack and all to get to our little round hut! That evening there was a masquerade party so I spent the afternoon trying to find my creative genes, needless to say my mask was awful, but at least it earnt me the free glass of punch!! There wasn\'t really that much to do in Coffee Bay so we spent the next day on the beach and walking around before going to look at the sunset. The view over the bay with the sunset was amazing!
I left Coffee Bay for Port St Johns on on the 23rd with some people I\'d met there. As soon as we arrived at the hostel we got whisked off to go and see yet another sunset. Unfortunately we actually managed to miss the sunset but the view from there was yet again amazing! That weekend in Port St Johns they had an African Music Festival on so we spent a lot of our time down there. On the Saturday night though lots of the dancers and musicians from the festival came up to the hostel. It was one of the best nights in SA, everyone was all so friendly and you had no choice but join in with the dancing. As you all know my (African) dancing is amazing!! - no comments please! Also whilst we were in Port St Johns we went on a trip to a local village which has cave with mud with cleansing properties. We went to the cave and covered ourselves in mud before walking back through the village. Suprisingly we got no funny looks when we walked to our canoes even though we looked absolutely ridiculous. We got in our canoes and started the 10km canoe back to Port St Johns which was knackering. Unfortunately \"team England\" came last to \"team Oz\" and \"team Germany\" - gutting! To add insult to injury when we were about 50 metres from the finish line we ran aground. We got out of our canoe to walk the last bit when we disappeared up to our thighs in mud, with all the other teams standing on the shore taking photos and laughing, having already made the mistake themselves! Thanks for the warning guys!!
After Port St Johns I moved on to Warner Beach which is just south of Durban. There I met up with a couple of girls I\'d met further down the coast so spent some time catching up with them. The next day an Australian offered to drive us to Oribi gorge so we went along. The gorge a beautiful and had lots of crazy activities going on. I was really tempted to do the gorge swing but after seeing that you had to freefall for 30 metres I quickly opted not to!
The next stop was Durban Airport to meet up with Jak and then we headed into Durban. I think we can both safely say that we won\'t be returning to Durban - it was so scary, but you never know we could have been in the wrong area! That night we hatched a plan to leave Durban as quickly as possible!!
