Helen's Travels
So much to update!!
Since I left Cape Town I headed firstly to Hermanus with the hope of doing some sandboarding with the fastest South African guy on sand! As cool as that would have been it didn\'t really work out and I spent the day doing the cliff walks which had amazing scenery. With the sandboarding not happening and after sampling a bit of Hermanus\' nightlife on a Friday (which had a lot to be desired) I decided to leave to go to Wilderness!
Wilderness really does live up to its name, a beautiful beach but not a lot else! Met quite a few cool people on the baz bus to Wilderness so spent the afternoon on the beach with the view to spending the next day there. As was my luck though it decided to throw it down and I was on the road again, this time to Knysna.
I moved onto Knysna with a couple of people and had a fun filled day of activities! Firstly, we got the Choo-Tjoe Train (a steam train) to Sedgefield (the next town up), the scenery from the train was really cool. The whole of Knysna is built around a lagoon with the train going through the middle of it. After getting to Sedgefield and having 15mins before the train back, just enough time to take cheesy pictures, we headed back to Knysna. When we got back to Knysna we decided to go on a Catamaran cruise to see the Knysna Heads (a big rock formation). We headed out in style, sitting on bean bags at the front and cruised over to the heads. Unfortunately, the weather wasn\'t that great and after the skipper told us that they have on average one shipwrek every 6 weeks and that it was one of the only places that insurance companies wouldn\'t insure boats for I was quite glad that we didnt attempt to go through the channel!
After Knysna I continued onto Stormsriver, which has all outdoor activities you could imagine including the worlds highest bungy jump. I decided to do something a bit more relaxed though and did the zip wiring at Tsitkamma Forest Park. It was really cool, the zip wires were all over the Orange River through the middle of a gorge, so the view was amazing when you were half way across. After our zip wiring, we went to the national park and hiked to the waterfall, which was actually almost as hard as climbing table mountain but half as worthwhile!
After Stormsriver I continued to Jeffreys Bay which is probably one of the best places I\'ve been to yet! The backpackers was amazing! We arrived off the bus at around 10pm with the full moon party in full swing so we dumped our bags and joined in with the antics! The next morning it was pretty cool to see the backpackers location - right on the beach! Once again the weather wasnt the best but as Jeffreys Bay is the surf capital of the garden route, a group of us went shopping to all the surf shops, we literally must have spent over two hours in the Billabong shop and I only had one top to show for it, my bank balance will be happy! The next night was pretty much as crazy as the first, and whole bunch of people arrived that I\'d met further down the coast so it was cool to catch up with them. The next day we had signed up for a surf lesson, I\'d love to say that I was really successful, but to be honest I wasnt that great! I put a lot of effort in but must have stood up only twice, to add to the disappointment, I unfortunately don\'t have any pictures of me in the really flattering wetsuit! I spent one more day at Jeffreys Bay and this time went sandboarding at last. I was a lot better at this than surfing, and got sand absolutely everywhere, I also have evidence that I actually did sandboard! The dunes were really nice, but I didnt really move on from the easier ones. When you grease your board you absolutely fly, so I tried to stick to more sedate dunes when I\'d first sanded my board, then on the third run increase the difficulty, but going at a negative speed! We were leaving Jeffreys Bay that evening but as the bus didnt leave till 10 pm and as it was St Patricks Day, we joined in the antics in the bar, with lots of mini guinesses around it was amazing that we actually got on the bus and arrived in Port Elizabeth!
