Scenes, painted and carved like this, are found inside churches that have been carved out if rock. This was deep in Rose Valley. We hiked for about 3 hours through Red and Rose valley seeing different rock formations, houses and churches carved out of the landscape and going through tunnels. It is a spectacular landscape.
We then visited a place where they make pottery (then try and sell it to you). However, it was definately cool to see a potter create a vase out of a chunk of clay, using a Hittite designed pottery wheel (leg power to spin, not electric) in a few minutes. The hand painted pieces were pretty spectacular but waaaay out of my price range (not to mention the space in my luggage issue).
We visited the aptly named fairy chimneys after. These have caps of basalt which have created weird and wonderful shapes. Overtime the caps will fall and the rest of the chimney erode away. There was also a camel! Weird looking animal and much bigger than I expected.
I then went out for dinner with a couple of aussies from our group (cosy wee foursome), had a bit of red wine. Met up with the guide and obe of the other guys in a bar which just so happened to have an Aussie bartender (the ceiling was decorated with flags and I did spy a NZ and all blacks flag lurking around). Then drunk quite a bit more red wine.
Has to be done sometimes.
