Gallipoli. Anzac Cove. Lone Pine. Chanuk bair. The Gallipoli peninsular is now a peace park and is dotted with memorials dedicated to the 130,000 approx soldiers who died there in WWI. My group visited the important spots and spent about 3hours on the peninsular, including the NZ, Oz and Turk memorials. The phrase coined by Atarurk in 1938 sums up the feeling- "Those heros that shed their blood and lost their lives, you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country, therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in the country of ours...you, the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears, your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace after having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well."
Its a powerful sentiment and a feeling that permeates the place.
