With an early flight from Luton on Saturday it needed a hotel stay on Friday night so we could catch the 0730 Wizzair flight to Ljubljana in Slovenia. The flight cost was less than £31.50 for both of us including one checked bag - a bargain! In Ljubljana we were met at the airport by Tina, from Taxi Legende, who whisked us into the city in around 30 minutes for just €20. This was just €2 more than catching a shared shuttle bus and we had a Mercedes Vito van to ourselves. So far so good . . . . . but things went a little pear shaped as our onward train to Rijeka in Croatia, at 1510, was replaced by a bus as a result of (I believe) the migrant crisis. A three hour trip on a coach was not to be looked forward too! So that still gave us around three and a half hours to see the very attractive capital city of Slovenia. The old town area is really nice, there are some great buildings, plenty of shopping opportunities and loads of cafes, restaurants and trendy looking bars to take a break in too. If you want a boat trip on the then why not? If you want to take the funicular, or the mini road train to the castle, again, why not? Or maybe pay a visit to the Slovenian Railway Museum if all of the touristy sights get a bit too much? Ljubljana probably has more than enough to keep you busy for a couple of enjoyable relaxing days so would make an ideal weekend destination in itself. Our whistlestop tour, including a tasty lunch, was as we expected all too brief. Then again it was only ever planned to be a lunch stop on the way to Croatia as we got that great value flight from Luton, just a shame about the coach vice train! If you have longer and with a car for ease (or maybe a bus/train) you could easily spend much more time in Slovenia. There is plenty on offer in this small country including the mountain resorts, the seaside areas around Portoroz or the stunning caves at Postojna which are accessed by narrow guage railway. That will all easily fill a week so why not have a holiday in Slovenia as I think you would like it!
