With the flight delay we were on the ground at Oslo's Gardermoen airport at around 1340 rather than 1225 so our time in the city was reduced just a little bit - but we still had about eighteen hours. Heading into the city we caught the normal train rather than the dedicated express train as we didn't have to pay for the former because of our free NSB rail travel coupons. The Scandic City Hotel was slap bang opposite Oslo Sentral station - very handy now upon arrival, but far more important when we leave the following morning on the 0802 train to Trondheim! The room was fairly compact and clean but plenty big enough for a one night stay. Heading out into the city we took in Karl Johans Gate, the main shopping street, saw the parliament building and the Royal Palace. Our arrival also coincided with the Christmas light switch on and what appeared to be the opening of the city centre festive market - the city centre was heaving. We spent a good deal of time in the revitalised waterfront area of Aker Brygge/Tjuvholmen, which was a nice area to wander around giving views back to the castle, the rather blocky Town Hall (or Rad House) and the city itself. Our evening meal was taken at Tuk Tuk Thai, a short walk from the hotel which served up good authentic Thai food. The place was busy and with a bill of around £44 for two meals and two drinks, for Oslo, the price was pretty reasonable too. Rounding off the evening we called in at the Jazz Bar, for a final drink of the evening and at £9.50 for a glass of rosé wine and nearly £8.00 for a pils beer that Duty Free purchase at Gatwick seemed like a great idea! Our Sunday morning was another early start in order to grab some breakfast at the hotel (a mighty fine spread that warranted far more attention that we could manage in less than 20 minutes) in order to wander across to the station and catch our train to Trondheim. The trip north is scheduled to take around six and a half hours and travelling Comfort Class, which includes free tea and coffee, should make it a pleasant journey of which most should be in the daylight. Goodbye Oslo, see you (well, the airport) in a week's time!
